Testing anthropic predictions for Λ and the CMB temperature

چکیده
It has been claimed that the observed magnitude of the vacuum energy density is consistent with the distribution predicted in anthropic models, in which an ensemble of universes is assumed. This calculation is revisited, without making the assumption that the CMB temperature is known, and considering in detail the possibility of a recollapsing universe. New accurate approximations for the growth of perturbations and the mass function of dark haloes are presented. Structure forms readily in the recollapsing phase of a model with negative Λ, so collapse fraction alone cannot forbid Λ from being large and negative. A negative Λ is disfavoured only if we assume that formation of observers can be neglected once the recollapsing universe has heated to T > ∼ 8 K. For the case of positive Λ, however, the current universe does occupy a extremely typical position compared to the predicted distribution on the Λ−T plane. Contrasting conclusions can be reached if anthropic arguments are applied to the curvature of the universe, and we discuss the falsifiability of this mode of anthropic reasoning.

Why Is the Cmb Fluctuation Level 10 − 5 ?
We explore the qualitative changes that would occur if the amplitude Q ∼ 10 of cosmological density fluctuations were different. If Q ∼< 10 , the cosmological objects that form would have so low virial temperatures that they may be unable to cool and form stars, and would be so loosely bound that even if they could produce a supernova explosion, they might be unable to retain the heavy elements...
متن کاملIsocurvature forecast in the anthropic axion window
We explore the cosmological sensitivity to the amplitude of isocurvature fluctuations that would be caused by axions in the “anthropic window” where the axion decay constant fa ≫ 10 GeV and the initial misalignment angle Θi ≪ 1. In a minimal ΛCDM cosmology extended with subdominant scale-invariant isocurvature fluctuations, existing data constrain the isocurvature fraction to α < 0.09 at 95% C....

Selection effects in cosmology are often invoked to “explain” why some of the fundamental constant of Nature, and in particular the cosmological constant, take on the value they do in our Universe. We briefly review this probabilistic “anthropic reasoning” and we argue that different (equally plausible) ways of assigning probabilities to candidate universes lead to totally different anthropic p...
متن کاملTesting the CMB Data for Systematic Effects
Under the assumption that the concordance Λ cold dark matter (CDM) model is the correct model, we test the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy data for systematic effects by examining the band pass temperature residuals with respect to this model. Residuals are analysed as a function of angular scale l, galactic latitude, frequency, calibration source, instrument type and several other...
متن کاملCosmic Microwave Background Tests of Inflation
Inflation provides a unified paradigm for understanding the isotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the flatness problem, and the origin of large-scale structure. Although the physics responsible for inflation is not yet well understood, slow-roll inflation generically makes several predictions: a flat Universe, primordial adiabatic density perturbations, and a stochastic gravity-wav...
